Serena Williams Discusses With Selena Gomez How She Stays Mentally In Shape

Serena Williams recently declared her intention to retire in order to spend more time with her family. She has been concentrating on something other than tennis for a while though.

In an interview with Selena Gomez’s Wondermind mental health program, the two talked about maintaining good mental health.

Williams remarked, “For me, mental fitness is just basically learning to shut down. And as you well know, I did this before before mental health became a hot topic.

“I’m going to shut myself down today,” was more accurately how it felt. It was something I’ve always done, just unconsciously,” she continued. “So I always have shut down periods now that I know how crucial it is just to put yourself first, especially mentally. I don’t allow anyone cross my strict boundaries, which I have.

The athlete, 40, stated that she is attempting to prioritize herself. “I really don’t do anything for me, I’m terrible at it, so it’s very crucial for me to make sure I have a period of, like… it’s so bad! And I’ve repeated it numerous times: I’m working on it. However, I’m at least prioritizing what I need to do,” Williams continued. “And after that, when I’m off, I’m off.”

Serena Williams stated earlier this month that she is leaving the sport that helped her become a household name. After the 2022 US Open, the tennis player who held the No. 1 ranking in the world according to the Women’s Tennis Association for 319 weeks announced that she would “evolve away from tennis.” Williams claims that she decided to resign so she could concentrate on “other things that are important to me.”

After the US Open, the 23-time grand slam champion said she will be moving “in a different direction,” but she will give it her all while competing.

I’ve never been a fan of the word retiring. I don’t feel like it’s a modern word,” Serena remarked to Vogue. “I’ve been seeing this as a transition, but I want to be careful how I use that word since it has a very specific and significant meaning to a group of individuals. Perhaps the easiest way to sum up what I’m doing is to call it evolutionary. I’m here to let you know that I’m moving away from tennis and toward other priorities.

Unfortunately, I wasn’t prepared to win Wimbledon this year, she continued. Furthermore, I’m not sure if I’ll be prepared to win New York. But I’ll make an effort.
