Michelle Obama Responds to “Horrifying” SCOTUS Decision: “It Must Be a Wake-Up Call”
On Friday, the Supreme Court formally overturned Roe v. Wade, ending federal protection of the right to an abortion and granting each state the power to enact its own laws governing the right to a choice. The former first lady shared a statement on Instagram shortly after the Supreme Court announced its decision, expressing her sorrow for those who will no longer have the fundamental right to control their bodies and for our society, which must return to a time when women risked their lives for and were made to live with unintended pregnancies. That is what her mother, grandmother, and great-grandmothers experienced, and now we are experiencing it once more, she wrote.
“I am heartbroken — for the teenage girl, full of zest and promise, who will be unable to finish school or live the life she wants because her state controls her reproductive decisions; for the mother of a nonviable pregnancy who is now forced to bring that pregnancy to term; for the parents watching their child’s future vanish before their very eyes; for the health care professionals who can no longer assist them without running the risk of jail time,” she continued.
Obama urged everyone, especially young people who would “carry the load,” to channel their passion and frustration into action despite the fact that the decision is horrible and “will have disastrous effects.” “It must serve as a wake-up call.
