50 Cent Weighs In on Will Smith’s Oscars Ban: ‘This Is Too Harsh’

50 Cent is upset over the Motion Picture Academy’s decision to bar Will Smith from attending the Oscars for the next ten years as punishment for hitting Chris Rock during the ceremony last month.

The hip-hop mogul took to Twitter shortly after the decision was announced on Friday, blasting the Academy for “doing Will dirty.”

Fif wrote, “Got Damn they’re doing Will filthy.” “This is really harsh. He won’t be able to return until he’s 63 years old. And the lawsuit has yet to be filed. SMH.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences stated that Smith will be banned from attending the Oscars for the next ten years after its 54-member board of governors had a virtual meeting Friday morning to deliberate what disciplinary actions to take against him.

“The Board has decided that Mr. Smith will not be authorized to attend any Academy events or programs, in person or online, for a period of ten years beginning April 8, 2022,” said AMPAS president David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson.

“The 94th Academy Awards were meant to be a celebration of the many individuals in our community who accomplished amazing work this past year,” the statement added, “but those moments were overshadowed by Mr. Smith’s disrespectful and hurtful actions on stage.”

Smith made a brief statement shortly after the Academy’s announcement, saying, “I accept and appreciate the Academy’s decision.”

The Best Actor prize will not be taken away from the 53-year-old actor, and he will remain eligible for future Academy Award nominations.
