Miracle Birth: In Uterine Surgery Saves Unborn Baby’s Life

This is an astonishing tale about using technology to save an unborn baby. An unborn baby was removed from the womb to have life-saving surgery, and then doctors returned him to the womb.

Sam Drinnon considered himself fortunate to be the father of a second child. She was overjoyed at the prospect of starting a family and ushering her second kid into the world. Until physicians discovered a tumor inside her son’s heart during an ultrasound, her pregnancy appeared to be going swimmingly.

Sam found out her baby Rylan might need surgery when she was 26 weeks pregnant. And it meant her unborn child would be taken out of the womb and subjected to a dangerous surgery.

Sam hoped that God would protect her baby the day she learned the news. She was terrified that she would lose him. She recalls calling her husband Dave and telling him, “A slew of emotions erupted in a flash. I was afraid I was going to lose my baby, but the physicians assured me that they would refer me to the best team for treatment.”

Dr. Cass, a member of Rylan’s medical team, described Rylan’s condition as “very unusual.” It was so uncommon, he claimed, that he couldn’t believe it “This disorder affects less than one in every 100,000 pregnancies. These tumors can be found in the center of the chest, outside of the pericardial sac that surrounds the heart, or inside the pericardial sac. Rylan’s room was on the second floor, which is a far worse condition than you might think.”

Rylan could only be saved if he underwent a three-and-a-half-hour surgery at 26 weeks of pregnancy. Rylan was “half removed” by surgeons when they opened Sam’s womb. The surgeons were able to quickly remove the tumor from Rylan’s heart once they gained access to his chest and heart.

They restored the rest of his heart after the tumor was removed before putting him back into his mother’s womb. Rylan met his parents 10 weeks after his mother gave birth, proving that the surgery was a success.

Rylan is now a happy, healthy, and flourishing newborn boy. His is a miracle narrative that demonstrates that all life, no matter how small, born or unborn, deserves a chance. We thank God for the most recent technological advancements and for saving this precious life.
