Jim Carrey ‘Sickened’ By Standing Ovation For Will Smith At The Oscars: “Hollywood Is Spineless”
Smith was consoled by Bradley Cooper, Tyler Perry, and Denzel Washington shortly after hitting Rock and hurling expletives at him.
As the horrifying video of Will Smith slapping Chris Rock continues to circulate online, several celebrities, including Jim Carrey, have chimed in on the event. Despite the assault, the Liar Liar star did not hesitate to slam Smith before slamming the “spineless” audience of A-listers who applauded him and gave him a standing ovation.
“I was ill to my stomach. The standing ovation made me nauseous “During a CBS Mornings interview, the Bruce Almighty actor told Gayle King. According to ET Online, Smith was consoled by Bradley Cooper, Tyler Perry, and Denzel Washington shortly after hitting Rock and hurling expletives at him. “Hollywood is really spineless en masse,” Carrey observed, “and it felt like this was a really strong indicator that we aren’t the cool club anymore.”
Carrey added that while Rock didn’t want to seek charges for the attack, “I would have declared this morning that I was suing Will for $200 million because that tape will be everywhere for the rest of time. That affront will linger for a long time.” “You don’t have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words,” he continued. “If you want to yell from the audience and show disapproval or say something on Twitter [, that’s OK, but] you don’t have the right to walk up on stage and smack somebody in the face because they said words.”
“It didn’t increase,” King said when asked if things “escalated” on Sunday night. “It came out of nowhere because Will has something going on inside him that’s frustrated.” Rock made a joke about Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head when presenting an award at this year’s Oscars. Smith shaved her head to cope with her alopecia diagnosis.
Smith and his family went to a Vanity Fair after-party after winning his first Oscar for his role in King Richard and had the time of their life. The A-Listers “didn’t boo,” “didn’t turn their backs,” but instead “put up their phones to capture and pay tribute to him, the Will they recognize, the Will Smith they can get behind,” according to the Washington Post.
Michael Schulman of the New Yorker retweeted Variety senior editor Ramin Setoodeh’s video of Smith dancing with the description, “I’m watching Will Smith boogy to ‘Gettin’ Jiggy Wit It’ at the Vanity Fair party. Oscar has one hand in his pocket and a big grin on his face. What’s going on.” Of course, others who denounce Smith have nothing against him and, like Carrey, just disapprove of his aggressive reaction.
“I sincerely wish him the best… He’s accomplished a lot. That, however, was not a good time. It drew a gloomy cloud over everyone’s sparkling moment. It was such a self-centered moment that it cast a pall over the entire situation “The Dumb and Dumber actor, who isn’t the only comedian to speak out against the incident, continued. Smith’s violent reaction, according to Patton Oswalt and Kathy Griffin, might open the floodgates for others who perform jokes that the audience doesn’t like.
Very nervous for my shows at the @TheIrvineImprov tomorrow and Tuesday. Anyone have a catcher’s mask I can borrow?
