A Retired Police Dog Cries Upon Seeing His Former Handler; A Story That Touched Netizens’ Hearts

WangWang, an eight-year-old German Shepherd, was a sniffer dog at a security checkpoint in Xichuan, Henan Province, central China.

He retired in June 2019 and has found a lifelong home to call home for the rest of his life, which means he will be leaving his handler behind.

Last month, while on patrol in the neighborhood near Wangwang’s home, a police officer, Matan Wangwang’s previous handler, decided to surprise him by paying a visit to the furry companion.

A video posted to the Xichuan Police Douyin account – China’s version of TikTok – shows police officers approaching WangWang’s residence.

WangWang, anticipating his former handler’s call, dashed through the front entrance and into his former handler’s arms.

As he stayed at his former handler’s side, WangWang kissed his legs and shed tears of delight.

When it was time to leave and the patrol unit returned to their truck, WangWang refused to leave his handler and stayed with him.

“Wangwang’s hair is whitened, but he’s well-fed, and he’s gaining plump,” the message said. “It’s never easy to say goodbye to friends.”

During the heartbreaking reunion of the devoted dog with his owner, the hearts of the internet melted.

“Dog is a devoted companion, please treat him carefully!” wrote one.

A second added, “You can sense how much Wangwang misses his handler.”

Some viewers were perplexed as to why WangWang was not permitted to remain with his handler following the joyful reunion.

“Police dogs are normally well-fed in training centers,” Xichuan Police said in a statement, “but our officers cannot devote their time to playing or exercising with retired dogs.”

“In a decent household, they will be better cared for than in a training institution.”
