Teacher Wears The Same Hairstyle As Student Who Didn’t Believe She Liked Her Hair

When a kindergarten student “didn’t truly believe” that her teacher liked her hair, Ms. Bishop came to school the next day wearing her student’s hairdo to show her that she is both attractive and loved.

4-year-old August Burroughs is a kindergarten student at Sugar Land’s Lakeview Elementary School. August’s teacher, Leigha Bishop, observed that she was wearing her hair in a braided topknot one day at school and informed her that she liked it.

“August, like myself, is always changing her hairstyle. And when she came out of the van on Monday, I was like, ‘August, your hair is so lovely,'” Ms. Bishop elaborated.

Ms. Bishop is aware of the bullying that occurs in schools because of a child’s looks, particularly among children of color, and she makes an additional effort to compliment her kids on a daily basis in order to boost their self-esteem and create a positive self-image.

“When kids are appreciated for who they are as individuals rather than their scores on a report card,” Ms. Bishop noted, “they tend to want to be present in school and want to achieve in all parts of life.”

She went home that night and braided her hair in the same way as her pupil to show August that she truly liked her haircut.

“I returned home and began working on my hair. Because my student’s hair is identical to mine, I figured, “What better way to show her how she made me feel beautiful than with the same braided updo?”

The next day, she showed up to school, and August, who was four years old at the time, was both shocked and overjoyed to see her.

Ms. Bishop commented next to a photo of herself and August, “When your pupil is just so cute, you HAVE to mimic her.”

Hundreds of thousands of people thought that August is adorable and commended Ms. Bishop for making her pupil feel special.

“In situations like this, the bare least may suffice, but going above and above will leave a lasting impression. Ms. Bishop remarked, “I know a lot of people think education is about pencil and paper and test results.” “But it’s more to me than that. It’s when children feel secure in the knowledge that their teachers are paying attention to them.”

Finally, I am a teacher who views my kids as individuals rather than simply bodies in my classroom. Ms. Bishop stated, “I am a woman of color who wants to shine a positive light on children of all races.”
