Why Eva Mendes and Ryan Gosling Are So Protective of Their Private World

Eva Mendes occasionally shared parenting advice after becoming a mother, but she and longterm husband Ryan Gosling have never made a big deal out of their union.

For the time being, Eva Mendes’ world is no longer viewable.

Esmerelda, 7, and Amada, 5, are the couple’s two girls. The dependable quiet actress, designer, and mother of two was already not one to share much about her longtime lover, Ryan Gosling. But after a year that was difficult for practically everyone and during which the troll population occasionally came out in force, she has deleted all of the content from her Instagram account.

Mendes, who doesn’t often get involved in arguments, responded in February to a poster who had suggested that the reason she hadn’t been posting much was that she’d had “work done” and wasn’t satisfied with the results.

The actress and fashion designer added, “I’m posting less because I genuinely want to be present for my family. “My children want my attention, and posting takes too much time. When it comes to working, I’ll do it whenever I want. No, that is not the cause. I can’t personally balance my family and social media, which is the reason.”

And now everything is gone, including the video her children had of Mendes promoting her own line of clothing and accessories. Internet, nice job.

As her girls grew older, Mendes—who gave birth to both of them without any follow-my-journey fanfare—seemed more at ease opening up about at least some aspects of her personal life, like when she said on The Kelly Clarkson Show in October 2019 that Gosling was skilled in the kitchen.

Mendes laughed as he recalled the two of them in a picture from the 2012 Toronto International Film Festival, when they were promoting the project that brought them together “I’m not in love with him, I’m genuinely saying that. I don’t have feelings for him. What? I don’t love anybody.”

Mendes bent over the couch, laid her chin in her hand, and murmured, “Look at him, though,” as Kelly Clarkson gushed about how gorgeous she thought Mendes appeared in the picture.

Thus, romance is still alive.

The first rule of their partnership for years was that they didn’t talk about their relationship. It wasn’t news that Mendes was sprung on the Oscar-nominated actor.

The couple’s visible public lives after they first met on the set of The Place Beyond the Pines in 2011 only makes up a very small amount of the Cloud, despite the fact that they did go out—to parties and restaurants, of course, and hiking—which is practically required for actors in Los Angeles.

Although they first mingled work and pleasure, Mendes and Gosling swiftly returned to being one of Hollywood’s most elusive couples after leaving the Pines and gave up absolutely nothing about their romance. Mendes avoided the media for months before the births of Esmeralda in 2014 and Amada in 2016, meaning no one outside the family’s close circle even knew she was pregnant until she was about seven months along each time. Mendes did this because she knew the moment she stepped outside, the cat would be out of the bag.

Gosling seemed hesitant to discuss Mendes throughout, even though he was as amiable and meme-able as always and graciously recognized the advent of his children.

He tersely stated to ET Canada in 2015, “I know that I’m with the guy that I’m intended to be with.” When asked what attracted him to her, he responded, “She is Eva Mendes, so. Nothing else is on my search list.”

Having children was “the furthest thing from my thoughts” until she met the one person who filled the criteria, according to Mendes in an April 2019 interview with Women’s Health, so they were in agreement about what they were looking for in a partner. She said, “Ryan Gosling occurred. “I refer to developing a love for him. Then it made sense for me to have his children rather than my own. It was really personalized for him.”

Naturally, she eagerly went all in after that.

Ironically, Gosling admitted to The Times in London in 2011 that he’d prefer to be having children, but since he wasn’t, he’d just keep acting in movies for the time being. In that year, he released Crazy, Stupid, Love, Drive, and The Ides of March.

I don’t think I’ll be able to do both when someone comes along, and I’m okay with that, he continued. “Until I have children, I’ll make movies.”

Mendes hasn’t appeared in a film since Gosling directed her in Lost River, which they shot in 2013 and released in 2015. Meanwhile, Gosling managed to make The Big Short, The Nice Guys, and La La Land while also having babies.

But make no mistake, Mendes wanted that, and she has loved being a mother first and foremost.

The Hitch actor said to Latina in the summer of 2016: “I don’t enjoy saying ‘take me away,’ but in essence that’s what work does.” “I believe it can be very, very healthy if it seems worthy,” the speaker said.

But “I feel so privileged to be at home with my children right now. I am merely utilizing my good fortune since I feel so fortunate.”

Even yet, Gosling had the good sense to give credit where credit was due in a very public environment, despite how close-lipped he may play it.

In January 2017, Gosling accepted the Golden Globe for best lead actor in a musical or comedy for La La Land and said, “I would like to try and thank one person properly and say that while I was singing and dancing and playing piano, and having one of the best experiences I ever had on a film, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second, and trying to help her brother fight his battle with cancer.

“So,” he stared intensely into the camera, “sweetheart, thank you. If she hadn’t taken on all that, it would undoubtedly be someone else up here today instead of me. I’m in love with you, Amada and Esmeralda, my daughters.” (And after that, he dedicated his prize to the memory of Juan Carlos Méndez Jr., Eva’s brother, who passed away in April 2016—just 12 days before Amada was born.)

At the time, that was a previously unseen look into Gosling’s private life; ever since he started dating Mendes, he has typically preferred to discuss practically anything else in interviews. On The Ellen DeGeneres Show in 2016, when asked about Christmas gifts for Mendes and the children, Gosling delightfully changed his response to say that he wanted to acquire a new Roomba to help out his old Roomba because he felt awful that the original one was always diligently cleaning.

They can therefore be confident that their love story will stay mostly their own.

Mendes seems to have a stronger desire to discuss family issues now than she did when she first became a mother.

In 2020, she posted a genuine selfie on Instagram showing what “full on mom mode” actually looked like during the COVID-19 epidemic. “I’ve moved up from wearing my husband’s sweats to a robe. every day. File under: no longer receiving care “She wrote the image’s caption. “My focus these days is entirely on my children. Even though it’s difficult, they really need me right now.”

The desire to interact with other mothers is genuine.

Though Gosling and her children were conspicuously absent from Mendes’ Instagram (the only non-movie photo of him was the one from the TIFF on her official page), she was moved to share a glimpse into her private life because what mother can resist sharing anecdotes about the full range of child-raising experiences, from spit-ups and sleep schedules to Halloween and birthday parties, for very long?

Mendes was questioned by Clarkson about her realization that she had chosen “the way harder job” after pausing her acting career.

Mendes answered, “Every day. “And people are very kind; they genuinely want to prepare you when you are pregnant by warning you or whatever, but nobody can do that. Nobody. And nobody informed me that it would actually be a job. And a job that required me to have a staggering level of expertise in many different fields! An aggressive boss’s personal assistant, a cook, a chauffeur, “Then she deadpanned. “And they’re not appreciative! Do they show gratitude, she wondered as she turned to face the crowd. Does it eventually occur?”

Mendes and Clarkson, a mother of two herself, so shared some belly laughs while discussing the benefits and ironic humor of parenthood. Mendes continued, “And any other occupation you would need to take a test, or pass tests.” “A pregnancy test was the only test I had to pass.”

She responded with a smile when asked what was the most challenging aspect of everything: “I have to carry around so many snacks all day long. Even food needs to be transported in the car for a trip to the store!”
All of this was being felt by Clarkson. She gushed, “We are going to get along so great on this playdate.
However, while the ladies profusely apologized to one another for the delay in their playdate, they both have a lot going on.
In November 2019, Mendes celebrated the release of her New York & Company Holiday Collection, the newest product from the brand for which she also serves as the face. E! News was curious to know if Mendes’ girls have yet to take after their mother’s love of fashion. (Although she told Clarkson that Esmeralda and Amada had wanted to dress as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz for Halloween up to that point, variety was still not the spice of life.)
Clothing-wise, Mendes told E! News during a sneak preview at her collection held at La Descarga, a Los Angeles nightclub with a Cuban theme, “I kind of let them do everything.”
“As long as it’s appropriate for the temperature outside, I’ll let them wear pajamas to dinner, she said. When it comes to their clothing, I essentially give them free reign. I never make them fit into a dress against their will. I simply don’t.”
“Because I remember that sensation, and I didn’t enjoy it, Mendes continued. And my mother constantly compelled me—not forcibly, mind you—to wear gowns.” She chuckled. “But she insisted that you must wear a dress for this every time. I immediately said, “I don’t want to wear a dress to that!” In order to avoid pushing the dress, I just ask, “What do you guys want to wear?” Great.’ Or, “No, you can’t wear that; it’s too cold.” At that point, I become strict.”
In the meantime, Mendes’ mother (who is also Eva) continues to be one of her closest confidantes, and looking back, the designer can see how Eva Pérez Suárez tried to impart her sense of style to Mendes when she was a young girl. (However, she frankly wished that the senior Eva had saved more of her sharp writing from the earlier days.)
She was severely constrained because “we had no money,” Mendes recounted. “But she would always wear lipstick and had her hair done before leaving the house. She would make an outfit work by embellishing it even when it was a hand-me-down or something she owned for 20 years already.”
And right now, Mendes’ company is assisting ladies in feeling and looking put together.
Since her father, Juan Carlos Méndez, “still doesn’t even speak English,” Esmeralda and Amada would also practice their Spanish with their abuelo, she claimed that she and her mother were teaching her daughters Spanish.
He’s been here for a very long time, Mendes told E! News that her parents had immigrated from Cuba to Miami, where she was born. “When I was in high school, I distinctly recall thinking it was uncool, but now that I’ve completely crossed over, I exclaim, “Dad, this is so cool.” This is really impressive!”
Thanksgiving and Christmas are typically observed locally, and members of the Gosling family from Canada come to visit.
Mendes described a typical Gosling-Mendes holiday blowout as “and it’s just a big wonderful party.” “We get together so frequently that it almost always feels like a holiday, yet the customs are really simple. We simply eat a lot of food, perhaps someone gets angry with someone else, perhaps someone breaks down in tears, but we always end up making up, and then we celebrate.”
She chuckled at the idea. “That’s basically it. And generally it’s only my sisters and I that fit that description. Or maybe my mom and I—I’ll say she can’t have a second serving, and she’ll be upset with me. She is unable to consume some foods for health reasons, so I will allow her to consume a small amount before initiating further action. But it’s entertaining; I call it “fun fighting.””
Mendes said that it was more “like bickering”. “There is always some variation of that, or someone arrives really late and becomes upset because they missed the first course of dinner, but it is always hilarious. It is merely a piece of the holiday play.”
So that was the kind of activity that took place behind closed doors. It’s unknown if Mendes intends to ever update her Instagram page, but in any case, you shouldn’t hold your breath in anticipation of a beautiful Father’s Day homage to Ryan Gosling or a photo of the entire family snuggled up next to the Christmas tree wearing identical pajamas. (In addition, Mendes told E! that she hadn’t yet tried matching at home, even though it was adorable during the holidays.)
In response to a question on why she didn’t just upload some family images on Instagram in April 2020, Mendes said: “I have always had a firm barrier when it comes to my man and my kids. “Naturally, I’ll talk about them in moderation, but I won’t upload photos of our everyday life. I don’t have my kids’ permission because they’re still so little and don’t grasp what sharing their picture actually implies. Furthermore, I won’t publish their image till they are of legal age to give me permission. As far as Ryan and I are concerned, maintaining our privacy simply works for us.”
Additionally, Gosling does not use social media, so he will be wishing Mendes a happy 48th birthday the traditional way on Saturday.
He took a break after playing astronaut Neil Armstrong in Damien Chazelle’s First Man, but he has a number of projects in the works, starting with the suspense thriller The Gray Man, directed by the Russo brothers and starring Chris Evans, Regé-Jean Page, and him.
Mendes and Gosling simply enjoy being at home with each other and their kids, so they can’t help it.
Gosling said to British GQ late last year, while thinking about time at a Tag Heuer event, “My kids are growing up so fast I need to keep an eye on the clock in a way I never used to.” The watch Mendes gave him for his first Father’s Day was appropriate.
Mendes has discussed how hard it can be to leave for work for the day because, even though she loves designing her clothes brand, that means spending hours away from the children. She said to E! News in 2017: “Oh my God, nobody warns you about the guilt that you feel when you do work!” Obviously, I support taking care of oneself because that’s how I can care for others, but I also feel guilt all the time. She groaned. It makes you think, “Ugh, this will be there forever now.”
It’s a process, but at least she and Gosling don’t feel like they’re just feverishly attempting to keep two humans fed and clean, rinse, and repeat.
Mendes stated to Women’s Health in 2019 that “we’re just beginning to get out of survival mode.”
Gosling acknowledged to GQ in October that the daughters’ formative years made being apart from other children and the majority of their family members during quarantine a “difficult time” for them. I believe Eva and I performed more acting under quarantine than we ever have in our entire lives, so we did our best to amuse them.
Mendes has previously stated to E! News that she was open to returning to the industry if the appropriate project came along.
I simply believe that I would chose my duties differently now that I am older and a mother, she said. “It would have to be something that feels acceptable and that would still be enjoyable for me because I’m just a walking example for these girls, and I take that very seriously. You know, there are a lot of parameters. However, I would be quite happy.”
Mendes was eager to reunite with Gosling at the moment, even if she couldn’t have predicted that she’d one day be co-starring with her in-house leading man in a round-the-clock production of “The Pandemic Chronicles.”
She recalled, “Working with him when he was directing was my most enjoyable experience. “Being a part of it with him was incredibly creatively fulfilling, and he is a phenomenal filmmaker. Definitely, I would enjoy having that experience again.”
After ten years, she still wishes to spend all of her time with him…
