Couple Celebrates 81st Wedding Anniversary Decades After Pals Warned Their Relationship ‘Wouldn’t Last’

Last year, Queen Elizabeth sent Ron and Joyce Bond a special letter in honor of their 80th wedding anniversary

When it comes to issues of the heart, it sometimes pays to ignore your pals.

On January 4, Ron and Joyce Bond celebrated their 81st wedding anniversary, earning them the title of Britain’s longest married couple, according to SWNS.

“We never planned to be married for 81 years, and we feel we are very lucky to have accomplished this incredible objective,” Joyce, 100, said.

“It feels fantastic!” she exclaimed. “In our partnership, there is no one in charge; we both give and take.”

Ron, 102, echoed the idea, saying, “Life can be difficult at times, but we work through it together. We also look out for each other.”

The couple, who married in 1941, both say it was “love at first sight” — despite the fact that their acquaintances were originally unimpressed with the match and predicted that it “wouldn’t last long.”

“It was claimed of them at their wedding that they wouldn’t last long, how wrong were people?” Eileen, their daughter, recalled.

Ron, who served in WWII and afterwards worked at a local garage, was 21 at the time, while Joyce, a former Woolworths employee, was 19.

“Not only to my brother and me, but also to their grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren,” Eileen added. “It takes only a few minutes with them to see how much they love and care for each other, even after 81 years of marriage.”

Ron and Joyce celebrated their latest anniversary at ExtraCare’s Shenley Wood Retirement Village, where their son Bill gave them a radio shoutout.

Last year, the couple received a special card from Queen Elizabeth in honor of their 80th wedding anniversary, congratulating them on their remarkable achievement.

“It’s fantastic to discover that you’ll be celebrating your eightieth wedding anniversary on January 4, 2021. I truly hope you enjoy this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity “she penned.
