Twin Sisters Accidentally Meet for the First Time Nearly 15 Years after Being Separated as Babies

In 2007, a chance encounter at a restaurant altered the lives of two identical twins who had been separated at birth. The discovery of their existence by chance opened the door to even more dark truths behind their births.

When Andrea Penaherrera and Marielisa Romo strolled into a café in the southern Ecuadorian town of Milagros on a tragic day in March 2007, they had no clue their lives were about to alter forever.

Nonetheless, that tragic day signaled the beginning of the unraveling of a plethora of riddles surrounding their existence.

For one thing, they found they were twin sisters for the first time.

AN ACCIDENTAL IDENTIFICATION

They met by chance when they were fifteen, in what appears to be a movie storyline. Andrea recalls going out to dinner with her mother at a Milagros restaurant.

Their gazes flew across the room, where a striking adolescent girl sat, shortly after they had settled into their chairs. The two were taken aback when they realized the stranger resembled Andrea in every way, including hair, eyes, and height.

Marielisa was the stranger’s name, and she was accompanied by her parents, Roberto and Isabel Garcia.

Naturally, the two females began to converse, vowing to figure out why they had such identical phenotypes, which seemed too coincidental. They would eventually discover they were not only born on the same day, but also shared the same parents.

The story of the twin sisters who met by chance quickly went viral, gaining media attention. Several media outlets soon joined the girls in their effort to uncover the entire truth.

AN INVERTED TRUTH

While the duo’s chance meeting was already odd, more investigation revealed that the tale behind their separation was far more enigmatic.

Various versions of the separation narrative have circulated throughout time, so much so that exactly happened all those decades ago is still a mystery.

Petita Penaherrera, the girls’ mother, said she had no idea she had twins since the doctors in charge of her birth informed her she only had one, Andrea.

Roberto Romo and Isabel Garcia, she alleged, stole the second child without her consent and reared her as their own. Petita’s account of events has since been refuted by Romo.

He claims that the mother was aware of both infants from the moment they were born. However, as a teen mother, she felt she couldn’t handle two infants on her own, so she chose to place one for adoption.

BATTLE OF THE BREWING CUSTODY

Despite the controversies surrounding their split, the ladies were simply grateful that fate brought them back together. They were ecstatic to have each other as sisters, friends, and lifelong companions as they grew up.

The only thing standing between them and a lifetime together was their parents’ rivalry. Marielisa wanted to stay with her new family, but her birth mother had other ideas.

She and her husband, Augusto Friere, requested custody of her long-lost daughter shortly after reconciling with her.

WHICH IS MORE IMPORTANT: LOVE OR LAW?

Petita and her husband sued the physicians, stating that they had taken her from them. The adoptive parents, on the other hand, maintained their position, arguing that they gave the then-teenage mother multiple chances to reconsider abandoning one of her kids.

Authorities initiated an inquiry into the occurrence in the aim of bringing the matter to a close and providing closure for both sets of parents, who clearly loved their children. Marielisa, on the other hand, thought the court battle was pointless.

In an interview, the adolescent pleaded for her biological parents to withdraw the litigation and allow her to remain with her adopted parents, who had spent the previous fifteen years dedicating their life to loving her. That, she believed, was the only way they could demonstrate that they actually loved her as much as they professed.

Andrea and Marielisa’s tale was remarkable, but not quite as dramatic as the 1980 reunification of “Three Identical Strangers.”

Following a fortuitous rendezvous at college twenty years after their separation, their tale, which was eventually turned into an award-winning documentary, grabbed headlines in 1980.

After recognizing their similarities, classmates allegedly scheduled a meeting between two of them, Robert and Eddy, at Sullivan County Community College.
