Son Transforms His Basement Into A New Home For His Aging Parents

Time passes quickly, and before we realize it, our parents have reached retirement age and are enjoying their golden years. Their vision or hearing may have deteriorated, and they may not be as strong as they once were, but we still adore them.

We observe them go through these inevitable changes and wish we could slow down time – even just a bit – so we could spend more time with them. However, we are unable to do so.

Schon Miller is all too familiar with this sensation, since both of his parents are in their golden years. Bonnie and George Miller, both 87 years old, have had long and successful lives.

The old couple used to live freely, but due to a number of inevitable situations that come with age, they were no longer able to do so.

Schon’s parents were becoming more weak by the day. His father was forgetful, and his mother suffered a tumble that resulted in a broken shoulder. Schon began looking at homes that already had a finished mother-in-law room after that occurrence.

These suites are private living quarters for parents or in-laws that are frequently adjacent to or on the same property as the adult child’s residence, allowing older family members to be close to their loved ones.

Schon and his wife, Jeannie, couldn’t locate an in-law suite that was right for them, so they had a smart plan: they would build one of those unique small apartments themselves in their present home. Their next significant job was to rebuild their basement.

The couple blasted a hole in their basement and got rid of their leisure goods – pool table, guitars, and even their karaoke area – as part of their basement remodeling to make room for his parents to come in.

“We’d been talking with mother about it for a long since we knew they were dependent on each other with one good body and one good mind.” We didn’t want one of them to wind up in a nursing home because they couldn’t live alone,” Schon said.

The couple then gave George and Bonnie a tour of their new custom tiny home in Bremen, Ohio on March 13.

As Schon wheeled Bonnie in, she was the first to glimpse the inside. When his mother entered the house and saw the “beautiful” furnishings, she cried, “Oh my goodness!” Schon and Jeannie’s excellent initiative definitely moved her, and she couldn’t help but cry.

While Bonnie exclaimed over the magnificent handcrafted little house, George couldn’t agree more with his wife, exclaiming “Yes, indeed.” again and over.

They even made customizations to the house to assure the elderly couple’s safety, such as bars on either side of the toilet so they have something to grab on to, bars and a seat in the shower, and a rubber mat on the floor to keep them from slipping.

This isn’t your typical basement makeover; it wasn’t simply pretty to look at; the design was clearly well-thought-out, which made Schon and Jeannie’s effort all the more impressive.

Schon and Jeannie, from one marriage to the next, gave Bonnie and George the finest present of all time: a lovely and pleasant home to dwell in during their senior years.
