The Reason Chris Rock Declined Oscars Offer To Host 2023 Ceremony
Following the public and contentious slap by fellow actor Will Smith during the 2022 event, it appears Chris Rock was once again asked to host the Academy Awards.
Details of the offer were disclosed by the 57-year-old comic at one of his comedy performances in Phoenix, Arizona, over the weekend. Going back to presenting the Oscars, he told the audience, would be like going back to the scene of a crime.
Rock even made a reference to the 1995 O.J. Simpson murder trial, in which the ex-fate wife’s changed after she left a pair of eyeglasses at an Italian restaurant. It would be like asking Nicole Brown Simpson “to go back to the restaurant,” the comic responded.
According to the Arizona Republic, Rock went on to discuss Will Smith and the Oscars incident while making a reference to Muhammad Ali from the 2001 film “Ali.” He declared, “He’s bigger than me.” “A fight between Will Smith and I would not be approved by the state of Nevada.”
Although the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has not yet responded to Rock’s offer, Bill Kramer, the organization’s recently appointed CEO, said that the Academy is “committed to having a host on the show this year” and that they want to “move forward and have an Oscars that celebrates cinema.” That is our current area of attention.
