High School Senior Taking 92-year-old Great-grandma To Prom Brings Many To Tears
Many high school students anticipate prom night, a night when they may dress up and dance the night away with a romantic partner or a buddy.
Prom was the last thing from Dakota Wollan’s thoughts as a senior at Watford City High School. He could have asked any of the girls in his class, but he didn’t really want to, so he decided to forego it.
Dakota told his father, who advised that instead of inviting his 92-year-old great-grandmother, he invite his 92-year-old great-grandmother.
When Madeline Miller was in high school, she was never invited to prom. When her father became ill, she dropped out after a year and a half to aid her family.
The grandmother stated that she has no recollection of proms being hosted at the school during her tenure.
Madeline was the second-oldest of 14 brothers and sisters, and she was far too preoccupied with keeping her home in order to attend prom, even if one existed.
Dakota embraced his father’s advice and ran with it, rapidly devising a strategy for his “proposal.”
“I have this old truck she gave me; it’s a 1985 Ford that she passed down to me, and I fixed it up.” “So I got in my truck and made a sign,” he explained.
“Can I transport you to prom with this ancient truck?” read the sign.
When Dakota requested his great-grandmother, he was “very apprehensive,” and Madeline was perplexed when he walked up with the sign. Nonetheless, she gladly agreed.
“I’d never gone to a prom before,” she explained. “I was just wondering why he would choose a 92-year-old to accompany him to prom when the school had so many young girls.”
It’s a good thing Madeline agreed because Dakota would have sat out the whole affair if she hadn’t.
Grandma hadn’t danced in 40 years, and this was her opportunity to do it once more.
“As a result of her, I was able to create a memory for both my last prom and her first prom,” the teen explained.
Throughout the night, the couple was the center of attention. Dakota recalled that when they stepped in, “everyone immediately went crazy.”
“Many people’s eyes welled up with tears” when they saw them dancing.
Dakota welcomed his great-grandmother home after they danced the first dance together.
Madeline described her favorite parts of the night as “walking by my great-grandson, listening to this music as we walked, and people clapping and yelling.”
Madeline described her encounter as “surreal,” saying she felt like the “belle of the ball.” After all, who would have guessed she’d be able to attend her first prom at her age, let alone with her great-grandson?
She stated, “I couldn’t believe I was out there.”
Dancing together at a once-in-a-lifetime event is a special experience that this grandson and great-grandmother will treasure for the rest of their lives. Despite their unusual match, the two had a terrific time together!
