Chris Rock’s Mom Rose Breaks Silence After Will Smith Slap: ‘When You Hurt My Child, You Hurt Me’
Rose Rock, Chris Rock’s mother, claimed that he’s still digesting’ the incident, but that she’s ‘truly, very proud’ of how he handled the slap incident.
Rose Rock, Chris Rock’s mother, has weighed in on the Will Smith slap controversy. “When Will slapped Chris, he slapped all of us, but he really slapped me,” Rose told NBC affiliate WIS 10 News in North Carolina. “You hurt me when you hurt my child,” she added.
Chris is “still processing” the horrible incident that occurred on-stage during the live broadcast of the Academy Awards on March 27, according to the 77-year-old, but she is “very, really pleased” of how the 57-year-old comedian behaved. Chris, for one, has kept quiet about the situation, but said he was “processing” at his stand-up act in Boston, MA a few days later, adding that he “didn’t have a bunch of s— prepared” to address it. He’s also suggested in a comedy performance that when he’s “paid,” he’ll talk about the smack.
Will smacked Chris’ son in response to a G.I. Jane joke made at Jada Pinkett-Smith, who suffers from alopecia, and Chris’ mother shared what she would say to him. “I don’t know what I’d say besides, ‘What in the world were you thinking?'” She added, “Because you did a slap, but so many things could have happened.”
“Chris may have fallen if he had taken a step back. You may have been handcuffed and taken out. You didn’t think about it. “You went up and made her day because she was bowled over laughing when it happened because you reacted to your wife giving you the side-eye,” Rose continued. Chris, however, declined to press charges, and as a result, Will was not arrested, and he went on to win the Best Actor award for King Richard later that night.
While the Fresh Prince star is free of legal ramifications, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has imposed their own: Will will be barred from attending the Oscars for the next ten years. The 53-year-old has also resigned from The Academy, which means he will no longer be a voting member. The punishment, on the other hand, did not appear to impress Rose. “What exactly does that imply?” “You don’t even go once a year,” Rose remarked. “It hurts me a lot that he never apologized. I mean, his folks wrote a post saying, “I apologize to Chris Rock,” but you reach out when you recognize something like that is personal.”
Will did issue a public apology to the Grown Ups actor, which he shared on Instagram on March 28. “Violence is poisonous and harmful in all forms.” My behavior at the Academy Awards last night was both terrible and inexcusable. Jokes about my health are part of the business, but one about Jada’s condition was too much for me to take, and I reacted emotionally,” he continued.
“I’d like to make a public apology to you, Chris.” I was both out of line and incorrect. I’m embarrassed, and my actions do not reflect the guy I aspire to be. He also addressed the Academy, producers, attendees, and viewers of the Oscars, saying, “There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.” Will has kept a quiet profile since the slap, although he was spotted at a VIP airport in Mumbai, India on April 23.
