‘God Is Great’: NBA Finals MVP Steph Curry Gives Glory to God After Golden State Warriors Win Championship

After his team, the Golden State Warriors, won their fourth NBA Championship title last Thursday, Steph Curry now has an additional NBA Finals Most Valuable Player Award to go along with his two NBA Most Valuable Player Awards (June 16).

After a fierce struggle in which both teams demonstrated their defensive prowess—including the Celtics’ Jayson Tatum—the Warriors defeated the Boston Celtics in six games.

Tatum is one of the best players in the NBA and isn’t afraid to express why he plays the sport. According to Tatum’s Twitter bio, anything is possible if you put God first. Philippians 4:13 says, “I am able to do all things through Christ who gives me strength. I play in Jesus’ name.

Curry expressed his gratitude to God for the opportunity to play basketball at the greatest level to a sideline reporter after the Warriors won game six to seal the best of seven series victory.

Curry exclaimed, “I’m really proud of our squad. “Every day I give thanks to God for allowing me to play this game at the greatest level alongside some incredible people. You are aware that winning a championship is what it’s all about because we have experienced it in the past few years. Everyone currently on the court didn’t think we’d be here at the start of the season. It’s incredible! It’s pretty bizarre.

After appearing in the NBA Finals in each of the previous five seasons and winning the championship three times, the Warriors only won 15 games in the 2019–2020 campaign. Numerous key players were hurt, notably Klay Thompson, one-half of the powerful “Splash Brothers” duo, who was sidelined for two years by his injuries.

Curry declared during the post-championship press conference that “God is awesome.” “This [championship] feels different for sure because of the opportunity to be on this stage and compete with incredible teammates against a fantastic Boston Celtics squad that gave us everything to try to get to the finish line.”

Curry made an appearance on the episode “Stephen Curry Changed the Game for Good” of the Dove Award-winning musician Tauren Wells’ podcast “The High Note” earlier in June. Curry discussed his conversion to Christ throughout the podcast and gave his parents—especially his mother—credit for laying a solid biblical foundation in his life.

Curry described his path as his own and said that he performs for “an audience of One.” The NBA player told Wells, “God doesn’t make any mistakes with everything that happens in my life and I rock with it. I’ve been given this position, these difficulties, these skills, this attitude and point of view on life.

According to Curry, the Currys are teaching their children the value of following Jesus, notably emphasizing that Jesus is where they find their identity, not in the successes of their famous parents.

Romans 8:28, which Curry’s mother would frequently message to him, gave him life, according to Curry.

In his words, “We know that God works all things together for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, and for me that was something I really believed—that whatever I put my mind to, whatever I decided I was going to really work at, have that spirit of accomplishment, that I was going to be able to live it out, and that has carried me all the way through whatever the challenge was.”
