Denzel Washington Jokes ‘Keeping His Mouth Shut’ Is Key To His 3-Decade Marriage
In Hollywood, finding long-term love can be difficult. While many of our favorite performers and actresses have several marriages and divorces, this is not the case for everyone in show business. In fact, despite Hollywood pressures, actors like Denzel Washington have found methods to make their marriages work.
Denzel Washington has had a long and illustrious career. He is a multi-award-winning actor who has dabbled in directing. His profession has earned him accolades from peers, reviewers, and fans alike, as well as led to his happily-ever-after marriage to Pauletta Washington. Pauletta, who is also a gifted entertainer, and Denzel make quite the star pair.
Pauletta Washington was born in North Carolina on September 28, 1950. She was born with the surname Pearson, according to IMDB. Pauletta is a libra who will turn 71 in the year 2021. Her hubby is five years her senior. Pauletta is a tall woman, at 6 feet 1 inch tall. She received her education at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts and the famed Juilliard School.
Pauletta has thoroughly immersed herself in the performing scene, not only by working as an actress but also by marrying an actor and becoming Rita Pearson’s sister.
In 1977, she made her acting debut in “Wilma,” opposite her now-husband Denzel Washington. Throughout her career, she appeared in several TV movies and series, including “The Parkers” and “The Watsons Go to Birmingham.” Beginning in 1998 with “Beloved,” she landed parts on the big screen. Her most recent projects put her talent in a more constrained setting, with the actress starring in a number of short films.
The renowned couple has a sweet love tale about how their decade-long relationship began.
Denzel Washington and Pauletta Pearson met in 1977 while working on a television drama called “Wilma,” according to The Oprah Magazine. Their acquaintance rapidly developed into a deep friendship, which they both credit for their relationship’s endurance. Before they fell in love, they were pals!
Denzel and Pauletta married on June 25, 1983, and they have lived happily ever after, honoring their vows to one other. They got the opportunity to renew their vows on a trip to South Africa in 1995, and the well-known Archbishop Desmond Tutu officiated the renewal. Denzel once said in an interview a long time ago:
“I’m not sure if show business has a monopoly on divorce; all I know is that you hear about it.” He went on to say, “I just think you’ll have to put in some effort. Not giving up on one another. It’s a long-term commitment. It’s not all about the honeymoon; it doesn’t last forever, so you have to put in some effort. And, hopefully, you’re excellent buddies to begin with, which may assist!”
The couple’s marriage hasn’t always been great, and they’ve had their share of bad luck. They’ve always managed to get through difficult times as a family, with John David, Katia, and twins Olivia and Malcolm.
Denzel’s marriage has survived thanks to a number of factors, including the fact that he has learned to shut up and always do what his wife asks of him, as he quipped in a previous interview.
“Security, food, and a lovely home are the first things that come to mind. The distinction between a house and a home is significant.”
During the same interview, he added. He also mentioned how important his wife has been in raising their children and creating a home for them.
Denzel is never reluctant to mention how his wife has been the family’s primary support system during a segment on the TD Jakes show highlighting the movie “Equalizer 2,” when questioned about his marriage. He went on to say something about Pauletta “When it came to taking care of him and the kids, she has always been the rock. She has imparted religious instruction on a daily basis. While I was out providing, she was the one who drove them to school.”
The couple has also stated publicly that their marriage is built on their deep religion. In an interview, Pauletta revealed that their marriage is spiritual and God-centered. When things became too much for her to handle, she sought spiritual help. “My close group is similarly like-minded, so we strengthen each other,” she continued regarding their friends.
Washington, though, had his share of difficulties as he progressed through his infancy, adolescence, and early manhood. Washington spent a lot of his childhood going to church because his father was a preacher, but he rejected it when he was a teenager, according to ABC News.
It was difficult for him to manage his faith and learn to cope with the divorce of his parents. Washington is still perplexed as to why his parents divorced.
In a September 2012 interview with GQ, he said:
“We didn’t get a chance to sit down.” They’re from a different period. You just assumed because I didn’t inquire. For whatever cause, such as a lack of love. I never inquired. I’m not sure what else I’d like to know. I wasn’t expecting it. But I wasn’t paying attention. “I was 14 at the time.”
Washington’s upbringing instilled in him the desire to improve his own relationships, as well as the understanding that communication was essential.
Surprisingly, their relationship only began due of a strange accidental encounter. They had met on the set of ‘Wilma’ and had previously talked and met as friends, but they did not have a deep relationship or connection. With one fateful encounter, everything changed. In a 1996 interview with Oprah, Pauletta detailed what transpired at the time:
“A party had been thrown by a mutual acquaintance who was also in the film. Denzel and his pals arrived towards the tail end of the celebration. We spoke once more. […] I went to a show the next night and arrived late, so I snuck in and sat down. I didn’t bother to look around. The lights came up at intermission, and we were seated next to each other.”
Denzel talked about this experience several years later, on Live with Kelly and Ryan in 2018, however he remembered it differently. “At that party, I mentioned that I wanted to see the play. I went to attend the play, and when the lights came up at intermission, she was seated [there]. She claimed she was only passing through and happened to see the play, however…” After that, the actor playfully interrupted his sentence, claiming that taunting his wife any further would get him in trouble. Denzel and Pauletta may differ on minor elements of their relationship, such as who paid for their first date (both claim they did) or how many times Denzel proposed before she said yes, but one thing is clear: they adore each other.
