Resurfaced Clip Shows Jada’s ‘Ungrateful’ Reaction After Will Spends Three Years Planning Surprise Party For Her
A footage from Jada Pinkett Smith’s Red Table Talk series has resurfaced, showing how her husband Will once spent three years preparing a surprise birthday party for her, only for her to not give him the reaction he expected.
Will had chosen to throw Jada, now 50, a grandiose surprise party for her 40th birthday, and the couple talked about it.
Things, however, did not go as planned — in fact, her reaction was so negative that it put Will into a ‘dark place,’ while Jada said it was the ‘changing point’ in their relationship.
In an episode of Red Table Talk, which Jada hosts with their daughter Willow and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, the two discussed the event.
“I suppose the turning moment in our relationship for me was when I turned 40,” Jada reflected. That was the beginning of my mid-life crisis.”
“Yeah, your 40th birthday was my worst moment,” Will concurred.”
The actor went on to tell how he’d spent three years planning an elaborate party for his wife, starting three years before her birthday.
“I hired a team the day after her 37th birthday to choreograph her 40th birthday,” he stated.
“I hired a documentary team, and I traced mommy’s familial roots,” he added, turning to Willow.
“I was going to plan her 40th birthday!”
“It was supposed to be a splash,” Jada said, a disappointed expression on her face.
Will then revealed the specifics of what he’d planned, stating, “Mary J. Blige sang, I premiered the picture, everything.”
“It was supposed to be the thing that got her through her midlife crisis.” It was supposed to be my most beautiful and heartfelt declaration of love.
“And she said the party was the most outrageous show of my ego she’d ever seen.”
“Crushed, right?” Willow’s father said, as Willow let out a sympathetic sigh. And I know I was crushed because it was true to this day. She wasn’t invited to the celebration.”
Many people were astonished to hear Jada’s reaction after the clip was recently re-shared on Reddit.
“Wow…. What the f**k,” one user said, before calling Jada “ungrateful.”
“Imagine being married to someone who spent literally years planning a special occasion for you and instead of expressing gratitude, you say it’s all to feed their ego… marital bliss,” one person remarked.
“Treat her like she’s a celebrity, and she’ll treat you like a fan,” wrote a third.
Others, on the other hand, could see Jada’s perspective, with one commenting, “The way he portrayed it sounded like it was to feed his own ego.”
Will later recalled ‘snapping’ in front of his daughter for the first time as a result of what had happened later in the talk.
“When she called me on it, that’s when I snapped,” he stated.
He added, turning to Willow. “Please accept my apologies; that was the only time you’d ever heard me snap.”
“Thank God!” Jada said as the two hugged it out.
Will went on to add that it was “the only time” his daughter had ever seen him snap during her life.
“I saw her look and Willow begins weeping, and I’m like, ‘Baby, I’m sorry, sorry,’ and she’s like, ‘Just figure it out,'” he explained. Please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please, please
“That was a display – that moment of like me having the strength to just say no,” Jada continued.
“But now I needed the fortitude to untangle it.” And I’ve just realized that for the next 40 years, I’m going to have to do things my way.”
