Liam Neeson Talks About The Impact His Wife’s Sudden Passing Had On Him, Visits Her “Every Day At Her Grave”

Liam Neeson, the 69-year-old Irish actor, has done it all. There seemed to be nothing he can’t achieve, from working as a truck driver in his early years to starring in the hit film series “Star Wars.” He’s been nominated for a Golden Globe, an Academy Award, a British Academy Film Award, two Tony Awards, and three Golden Globes. Neeson was ranked seventh on The Irish Times’ list of Ireland’s 50 best cinema performers in 2020.

Neeson has experienced his fair share of adversity and difficulty throughout his life and career. After all, success in the entertainment sector necessitates tenacity and determination. But one aspect of Neeson’s life has been the most difficult for him to overcome: the death of his wife.

In 1993, when they were both cast in a Broadway production of Anna Christie, Neeson met Natasha Richardson for the first time. Richardson was married to producer Robert Fox at the time. The couple was going through a divorce at the time.

Neeson travelled to Poland shortly after the premiere of “Anna Christie” to begin filming scenes for “Schindler’s List.” Richardson’s 30th birthday was approaching, and Neeson was concerned that she may forget about him, so he wrote her a letter the day before her birthday.

When Richardson responded with a question, Neeson was taken aback “It’s like receiving a letter from a friend. What is the nature of our relationship?” In an interview with the Daily News, Neeson stated that this is when he realized he was in love with her.

“That’s when I realized I was in love with this guy,” he stated. “I thought to myself, ‘This is true and genuine, and it needs to be protected.'”

A Medieval Romance

Richardson travelled to Poland after receiving her letter to join Neeson on set. The two became inseparable over the next few months.

Richardson consented to marry Neeson just a year after her divorce. They bought an 1810 farmhouse on a property in Millbrook, New York, after he finished filming, and married there in July of 1994.

The pair had problems, just like any other relationship. The public nature of her divorce, as well as allegations of an affair spreading among fans and the media, made it difficult for Richardson to start her new life with Neeson, she told the Daily News. Still, she couldn’t hide her feelings for Liam Neeson. Their love was ultimately more essential to her than anything else.

“When I met Liam, it was not an easy moment,” she explained. “Working with him, and what happened between us becoming public knowledge at the same time that my marriage was breaking apart, was unfortunate timing. So, what do I have to say? Obviously, I fell head over heels for him.”

Michael and Daniel were the couple’s two children. In 1996, Michael was born, and a year later, Daniel was born. While raising their children together, Richardson and Neeson also pursued their acting careers.

The couple made their affection for one another known by attending red carpet events and posing for paparazzi images together. They seemed to have the perfect marriage, and despite their busy schedules, they always made time for each other and their children.

A Tragedy Occurs

Tragic events occurred in 2009. Richardson was on a skiing trip in Quebec, Canada, with her oldest son when she slipped and struck her head. Richardson declined medical treatment after the fall and went about her day. She didn’t have a helmet on.

Richardson was brought to the hospital three hours later. Neeson, who was in Toronto at the time, rushed out to visit her right away.

He discovered his wife was on life support when he arrived. Neeson stated he told his wife he loved her even though he didn’t know if she could hear him.

Neeson claimed that he and his wife had made a deal that if one of them could no longer live a normal life, they would let the other go no matter what.

“I and she had made a deal. We’d pull the plug if any of us went into a vegetative state. You know what I mean? So that was my first thinking when I met her and saw all these tubes and whatnot. ‘OK, these tubes have to go,’ I said. ‘She’s gone,’ says the narrator “In the same Daily News interview, Neeson stated.

Neeson has been public about how much he misses his wife since her passing. He admitted that he still expects her to stroll into their house as if nothing had happened.

“It was never the actual thing. It still isn’t, in a way “”Neeson said.”

Despite the passage of time, Neeson’s affection for his late wife has never waned. In an interview with The Inquirer, he stated that he pays daily visits to her cemetery.

“Every day at her grave, which is about a mile and a half down the road, I speak to her,” Neeson added. “Because I travel down there frequently, I talk to her as if she’s here.”
